Product Tanker vs Crude Tanker: Which Is Better for Your Career

Both carry oil. The question of which is better for your career does not have one answer. It depends on what you are optimising for.

Here is an honest comparison of both paths.

What Each Vessel Type Does

Crude tankers carry unrefined oil from production areas to refineries. Loading happens at offshore terminals, single buoy moorings or dedicated crude loading ports. Discharge happens at refineries. One cargo grade, one load port, one discharge port, repeat.

The vessels tend to be large. Aframax, Suezmax and VLCC are the common sizes for international crude trading. The cargo operations are relatively straightforward compared to product tankers. You load crude, you carry it, you discharge it.

Product tankers carry refined petroleum products. Diesel, gasoline, jet fuel, naphtha, fuel oil. The vessels are smaller than crude tankers generally, running from medium range to Long Range 1 and Long Range 2 categories.

A product tanker might carry one grade or several. Multi-grade operations involve managing tank allocation, ensuring grade separation and cleaning tanks between cargo grades. The operational complexity is higher than crude tanker work.

Operational Complexity and Learning

For officers who want to develop strong cargo skills, product tankers offer more. The variety of cargo grades, the cleaning requirements between grades, the interaction with multiple charterers and terminals in different ports: all of this builds operational experience faster than crude tanker work.

Crude tanker operations are not simple, particularly at terminals with challenging conditions or on VLCCs where the scale of every operation is amplified. But the day-to-day cargo work is more repetitive and less technically varied than product tanker operations.

Port Variety

Crude tankers call at a limited range of ports. Major crude loading terminals are not numerous. Discharge is at refineries, also a limited pool. You see some ports regularly and others rarely.

Product tankers have a wider port range. Distribution terminals for refined products exist in most major coastal cities. Officers on product tankers over a few years of service tend to have visited more ports than equivalent crude tanker officers.

For seafarers who value variety in their working environment, product tankers have the edge.

Pay

VLCC crude tankers pay more than product tankers at equivalent rank. The size premium is real. A chief officer on a VLCC earns more than a chief officer on a medium range product tanker.

However, for officers who move from product tankers to chemical tankers, the chemical tanker premium more than compensates. Product tanker experience is a recognised stepping stone to chemical tankers. Crude tanker experience is less directly applicable.

If the long-term goal is maximum earnings, the product to chemical tanker pathway tends to produce better outcomes than a career spent entirely on crude tankers.

Which Operators Hire From Where

Chemical tanker operators, including Stolt-Nielsen, Odfjell and Navig8 Chemical, actively recruit from the product tanker pool. The cargo handling skills and operational discipline developed on product tankers are directly applicable.

LNG operators recruit from the broader tanker sector but often prefer officers with experience of complex cargo operations. Product tanker backgrounds are generally viewed as better preparation than crude tanker backgrounds for this reason.

For officers thinking several moves ahead, the product tanker route tends to offer more branching options.

The Honest Assessment

Neither vessel type is objectively better. Crude tankers, especially at the larger end, offer excellent pay and the experience of working on vessels of significant scale. Product tankers offer more operational variety and a more natural pathway to other tanker sectors.

Where you are in your career and what you want from the next five to ten years should determine the choice. Officers early in their careers who want to build broad tanker skills and keep options open tend to benefit more from product tanker experience. Officers who have already established themselves in the tanker sector and are optimising purely for pay tend toward the larger crude vessels or LNG.
