How to Get Your First Tanker Job: Practical Steps
Most tanker operators want officers with tanker experience. You cannot get tanker experience without a tanker job. The circle is real but there are practical ways through it.
Start With the Endorsements
Before any tanker application is realistic, the endorsements are required. Basic Training for Oil and Chemical Tanker Cargo Operations is the minimum. Three to five days at an approved training centre. Without it, tanker operator applications go nowhere. This is not a preference. It is a legal requirement.
Complete this before applying to anything tanker-related. It makes applications credible and removes an administrative step from the operator’s perspective.
Target the Right Entry Points
Not all tanker operators will consider seafarers without tanker experience. Focus on those who will.
Product tanker operators are more accessible for first tanker positions than crude or chemical operators. The cargo is less complex, operations are more forgiving and the risk of bringing in an officer without specific tanker experience is more manageable. Product tankers are the realistic first step.
Smaller tanker companies are more accessible than major international operators for a first contract. A company running coastal product tankers is a more realistic first step than approaching Euronav or Stolt-Nielsen directly.
What Your Application Needs
Sea service record that is documented and specific. Vessel names with IMO numbers, gross tonnage, vessel types, dates. A clean record showing consistent performance.
The tanker endorsement prominently listed in the certificates section.
References from previous masters or chief officers. Specific statements about cargo watch performance are particularly useful for tanker applications even if the experience was on dry cargo vessels. A chief officer who describes a reliable, attentive watchkeeper is saying something tanker operators value.
Be Honest About the Situation
When approaching agencies or operators, be direct. No tanker experience, relevant dry cargo sea service, tanker endorsements completed, looking for a first tanker contract.
This is more effective than obscuring the gap. Recruiters know what they are looking at. Pretending to tanker experience you do not have gets discovered at the interview stage.
After the First Contract
Keep detailed records of every cargo handled. Type, quantity, loading port, discharge port, any notable operational situations. This information builds the profile that more selective tanker operators want to see.
The market for your applications changes entirely after one tanker contract. You are no longer a dry cargo officer trying to break in. You are an officer with documented tanker experience. That shift opens doors that were closed before.
