Top Tanker Companies Hiring Seafarers
The tanker sector is served by a range of operators from major publicly listed companies to private regional operators. Knowing which companies are worth approaching and how to reach them produces better results than applying broadly.
Major Crude Tanker Operators
Euronav is one of the largest publicly listed crude tanker companies. VLCCs and Suezmax vessels, Belgian-controlled, consistent crewing structure. Recruits through specific manning agencies in key supply countries. Reputation for organised crew change logistics.
Frontline has grown significantly through acquisitions and now operates one of the larger VLCC and Suezmax fleets. Norwegian controlled. Recruits through agency networks. A realistic target for officers with some tanker sea service.
Nordic American Tankers operates a Suezmax fleet with a long track record. Smaller than Euronav or Frontline but with genuine crewing structure. Worth approaching for Suezmax experience specifically.
DHT Holdings operates a VLCC-focused fleet. Smaller operator, strong reputation among officers who have worked there.
Chemical Tanker Operators
Stolt-Nielsen is the most recognised name in chemical tanker shipping. Long history, global operation, genuine investment in officer development. Known for taking officer training seriously. A career at Stolt-Nielsen is considered strong preparation for senior roles elsewhere.
Odfjell is Norwegian with a significant chemical fleet. Strong safety culture, competitive pay, regarded positively by officers who have worked there.
Navig8 Chemical Tankers has been expanding and is more accessible for first chemical tanker contracts than Stolt-Nielsen or Odfjell.
LNG Operators
Shell, TotalEnergies and BP each operate significant LNG fleets. Getting in requires identifying their preferred crewing partners rather than applying directly. Entry requirements are high.
Flex LNG is Norwegian controlled with a modern fleet and has been building its crewing base. More accessible than major oil company-affiliated operators for the transition from conventional tankers.
How to Approach
Direct applications work for some operators and produce nothing with others. Manning agencies with specific operator relationships in the tanker sector are more reliable than generalist agencies.
LinkedIn is useful. Crewing managers and fleet personnel officers at most tanker operators have profiles. A specific message about your background and target vessel type gets read more often than generic applications.
